... "Pre-Heller Dan Simpson had a laundry list of demands sure to ignite a civil war, including total civilian disarmament. Following a 'three month amnesty… Special squads of police would be formed… Then, on a random basis to permit no advance warning, city blocks and stretches of suburban and rural areas would be cordoned off and searches carried out in every business, dwelling, and empty building. All firearms would be seized. The owners of weapons found in the searches would be prosecuted: $1,000 and 1 year in prison for each firearm… On the streets it would be a question of stop-and-search of anyone, even grandma with her walker, with the same penalties for 'carrying.'" ...

"Some years ago I was invited to debate on live radio a representative from the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. Formerly Handgun Control, Inc., this organization is devoted to the disarmament of American citizens. As an advocate of the Second Amendment, I took the key position that our framers meant to protect an individual right to bear arms, and, having just come off a hard-fought war against a tyrannical government, intended that armament of the populace would act as a deterrent against future government tyranny. This, charged my opponent, was the same mind-set held by people such as Timothy McVeigh ..."

"Enterprising gun manufacturers realized that if the magazine release button is replaced with a device that can only be engaged with the help of a tool (which, in the case of the 'bullet button' mag release, is simply a spare round of ammunition), then the shooter is, legally speaking, disassembling/reassembling the gun with every magazine change, rather than merely reloading it."

They’ve had plenty of time to make mistakes, learn from them, and then apply those lessons to another generation of firearms. They do still make mistakes (hey, who doesn't?), but those mistakes are rare, meaning that if you go to buy or shoot a Beretta firearm, chances are that it will perform just as you expect." ...

After a brief Powerpoint intro to active shooters—they exist and they need shooting—the rabbi, a cadre of cops and I did the live fire thing. Moving and shooting. Shooting and moving. Trying not to hit the innocents on the targets. What my teammates and I discovered: a rifle is a whole lot better an anti-active shooter weapon than a pistol. Especially for the not-so-active people downrange. At the conclusion of the drills, SIG SAUER gun guru Scott Reidy asked the police participants a simple question . . ." ...

"At some point, you just get lucky. My future father in law letting me borrow his Savage Model 12 LRP in .243 WIN is one of those points. He bought the gun last year for long range target shooting with some varmint hunting mixed in for good measure. Unfortunately, his work schedule has been pretty insane for the last few months and he actually hasn’t had a chance to do much more than warm up the barrel and get it roughly sighted in. Listening to him recount the sad story of his ownership a few weeks ago, I (jokingly) offered to take it off his hands for a few weeks. To my surprise he replied, 'Really? You’d do that for me? I just want to know what factory ammo works well with it, and make sure it’s properly sighted in.' ..." ...

The reason is that they’re designed for higher pressure cartridges, so making them permanently sealed lowers the probability of the cans coming apart under pressure. ... "The Second Amendment Foundation in Bellevue forwarded a copy of McGinn’s order to their attorney. The emergency order's wording says the ban applies to 'any weapon.' ... Sources tell this column that officers seized about 70 makeshift weapons Tuesday. None of them were firearms, but there were sharpened sticks, metal poles, screw-tipped wooden staffs and other nasty contact weapons."

"But it does not appear that legally-carried firearms — regardless the wording of McGinn’s order — were even on the radar screen. According to Seattle police sources, the order is aimed primarily at the long wooden staffs that were disguised as flagpoles, as well as other things some people were carrying Tuesday ..." ...

... "In the aftermath [of the North Bend shooting standoff], a handful of critics have weighed in from the cheap seats, in a couple of different venues. While authorities are trying to decipher what motivated Keller to murder his wife and child and then retreat to his fortified eight-years-in-the-construction bunker, it is less likely anyone will ever figure what motivates people to write comments like this, in the Seattle Times:" ...

"KCBS in Baghdad by the Bay has a shocking expose on a gaping loophole in California’s gun control laws. It seems that while you can’t own a rifle that will allow a user to use his finger to release and change a magazine, it’s A-OK if your long gun requires a tool to do it. Gunmakers, being the resourceful lot that they are, have created 'bullet buttons.' To drop a mag, all you need to do is use the business end of a cartridge to poke the little release in the middle what would normally be the magazine release button on the gun in any other state in the union . . ." ...
